TY in January and February

YSI, Wellbeing Week and School trips

TY in January and February

January and February have been jam-packed with lots of achievements and trips in TY.

To kickstart the new term, we had 4A take part in the North Dublin Wheelchair Basketball Tournament in the National Sports Centre. 4A won 3 of their 4 tournaments which saw them through to the semi-finals, unfortunately they were unlucky in the finals. Well done to 4A on representing the school and adding to their YSI project.

Next we had Well-being Week, organised by 4B for their YSI project of “Mental Health”. Throughout the week many great activities were held. We had our Breakfast Club every morning from 8am. Just Dance was held during lunch time to give our students a chance to show off their moves. There were also some great outdoor activities such as; the Keepie Uppie challenge, the Hula Hoop Competition and a Skipathon. Not to mention all the encouraging talks held throughout the week from; Healthy Eating, Barnardo’s, SpunOut, Pals and Shane Carthy. 4B also began their Aware Mental Health Programme. Altogether it was a very successful week and well done to 4B for all their hard work.

Our PE classes got a chance to try a whole new experience. From gym sessions to Leinster Rugby, our TYs were flat out trying new things and getting fit!

TYs also began taking part in the Manuela Programme, to learn about consent and sexual harassment. This is a six-week programme that will continue after midterm.

Chroídhia Myers visited Croke Park with Mr.McCue after placing runner-up in the Secondary School Writing Competition as Gaeilge.

The TYs visited the Red Cow Hotel to see the “RSA Roadshow”. This was a very eye-opening trip learning about the dangers of speeding and the devastating effects it has on families. There wasn’t a dry eye in the audience.

The ladies of TY took a trip to the RDS for the iWish Convention. This was a great trip that taught the girls about the career opportunities available with STEM and the great ways they can contribute. The boys also took part in a workshop ran by ‘Develop Me’ training specialists. They built bridges out of sticks and solved puzzles and most importantly wore colourful hard hats.

We also had a great success in YSI, with three of our students from 4B taking part in “YSI Den”. Eva Finnegan, Erin Kehoe and Joseph McGoldrick presented their project of “Mind Your Mind” and took home the full amount of 500 euro. Well done to all of 4B for their hard work on their project, to the three speakers and to Ms Convery for her contribution.

A fantastic trip to the Air Traffic Control in Dublin Airport was organised for 20 of our TYs to take part in. They learnt about radar and the important role Air Traffic Control play in the airport. They also got an opportunity to visit the control tower and meet the people who work there.

Spikeball has been introduced to the girls of TY. After taking a test, the girls have taken part in coaching sessions to not only learn about the sport but learn how to teach younger girls how to play also.

4A have been actively working on their YSI this month. They have been trying to reach their goal of 480km (the distance of the country) on a bike for the Irish Heart Foundation. They have been doing this by having bikes set up in the central area and getting more distance each day. They have also been sharing the love in school by selling Love Hearts to everyone (both students and teachers!). The money raised will be contributing to the TY’s production of “Thank You For the Music”.

We have had a very successful term in TY and can’t wait to accomplish even more in the next term.
