Student Leadership in Lusk CC
In Lusk Community College, we believe that to continue to grow as a successful school with a great spirit and links to the community it is important to have strong student leaders. Students must have a sense of ownership and a voice in a school. It is with this in mind that we have put the following Leadership structure in place. It is early days and we are constantly developing, learning and changing, but with the dedicated students already involved we are making great progress.
All of our students are encouraged to join in with the development of our school and this takes the form of different student organisations. We offer students the following opportunities:

  • House Captains
  • Head Girl, Head Boy & Deputy Head Girls and Boys
  • Press Team
  • Student Council
  • Sports Prefects
  • An Gaisce – The President’s Award
  • Amber Flag Team
  • JIGSAW One Good School Student Representatives
Head Boy/Head Girl
We have a Head Boy and Head Girl who are nominated and chosen in May of each school year. They represent their school and are students who have made outstanding contributions throughout their time in school to the school community and fellow students.

Head Girl : Aoibhe Shanley
Deputy Head Boy : Rory Gallagher
Deputy Head Girl : Lucy Sandford

The role of Head Girl and Boy and Deputy Head Girl and Boy is an honorable one steeped in tradition. The announcement of our new team is met with great excitement each year! This team lead by example throughout their final year here, taking major roles in events such wholeschool assemblies. It is an opportunity for them to engage with both staff and students, developing leadership and social skills.

Houses
In Lusk Community College we have a House system in place with Houses named after iconic leaders in areas of science, politics and the arts which we feel represent the broad range of interests in the school. The Houses are called, Mandela, Bronte, Picasso, Einstein, Ashe, Markievicz and Curie.
The purpose of a House system is to help create a sense of community in a large school. We have Inter House Competitions throughout the year and each House has two/three House Captains from the senior students in the school who are the voice of each House and help to foster the community spirit and encourage participation in competitions.
House Captains
Lusk Community College provides the opportunity for Senior Cycle students to apply for House Captain positions. The role of House Captain is highly respected and a very important role in the school. The goal for an aspiring House Captain is to create a culture of collaboration, inclusiveness and community within their own ‘house’ and across the wholeschool in their role throughout the year. Captains are expected to establish and maintain the highest standards of behaviour, attitude at all times providing a positive role model for all students. House Captains are appointed in Transition Year or 5th Year to undertake the various roles of responsibilities. Our House Captains take a lead role in orgainising ‘ We are Lusk CC week’.

Mentors
The mentors act as a support network for the incoming 1st years through various methods. Their duties include:
  • Making contact with first year students
  • Help with the transition to classes/navigating the school building
  • Helping out with the 1st year information night for parents and first year bonding day
  • Visiting their tutor group at the beginning of the school term
  • Ensuring that the class become acquainted with them, know their name, know who they are and why they are there
  • Get to know first years and show an interest in them as individuals
  • Encourage their involvement in after school activities, give tips for homework, etc.
  • Advise and reassure
  • Encourage positive friendships and help class members to get along and to accept each other
  • Liaise with first year tutors or year head regarding any issues arising

Sports Prefects
Sports Prefects in Lusk Community College are Senior students who are involved with the sports teams and extra curricular events in the school. Their roles include, training, helping out PE teachers and coaches and accompanying teams to matches. They also organize activities in the school and Inter House Sports leagues.
Student Council
The Student Council consists of a representative body elected from and by the general cohort of students in the school. The Student Council will give students an opportunity to voice their concerns and opinions and to play an active role in policymaking in the school. A member of staff will liaise with the Student Council and through the Council links will also be formed between the students and Senior Leadership Team. All year groups are represented on the Student Council.
